Arizona Rural STEM Summit people Making a Difference

Arizona Rural STEM Summit - Empowering Communities

STEM learning in rural communities shares many characteristics across vast geographies, yet it is also distinctly unique to each place. The National Rural STEM Learning Summit brings together STEM educators, administrators, STEM industry professionals, and community leaders to strengthen and elevate the quality of STEM education in rural communities through practice and dialogue.

First launched in August 2023 in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Summit drew STEM educators from K-12 and higher education, STEM-industry leaders, research institutes, science centers and museums, community organizations, and other nonprofits to learn from STEM education experts on current methodologies and best teaching practices, participate in hands-on workshops, and to share resources and expand their professional networks. This special event helped to explore the unique challenges and opportunities of STEM education in rural communities and provide practical, workable resources and solutions for participants.

2026 Rural STEM Summit's Featured Speaker

What happens when students pursue different ideas, products, and solutions while still meeting the same standards? This session explores an “organized chaos” approach to STEM learning that blends student ownership, proficiency scales, standards-based assessment, and strategic questioning to create highly engaging experiences. Through examples in engineering, coding, research, and makerspace innovation, participants will see how diverse student work can be assessed fairly using shared evidence of understanding. Attendees will leave with practical tools to increase ownership while maintaining clear expectations and accountability.

Rural STEM teacher shortages are often framed as a supply issue, but this session examines how district-level decisions in staffing, resources, and partnerships shape pipeline sustainability. Drawing on action research and rural district fieldwork, including insights from superintendents, the session introduces a practical framework for identifying how well-intentioned choices can unintentionally limit STEM access over time. Participants will engage in case-based analysis and leave with actionable tools to redesign decision-making and strengthen long-term rural STEM teacher pipelines
